I have made a 3/4" plywood bench seat that mounts across the curved floor of my 15 ft. aluminum boat. It sags badly when I sit on it. How can I increase it's strength and rigidity without making a bracket, ect. that touches the floor?...I was thinking attaching a piece of foam underneath and then adding 2 layers of fiberglass cloth/resin.....could it work?
Installing beadboard is a great way to decorate the face of the bench. Simply cut the beadboard to the appropriate height, apply construction adhesive to the back (Image 1), and install it to the face of the bench (Image 2).
The bulkheads under your seats- and the seats themselves- are important for keeping the proper shape of the hull. Taken together, the bench seat, bulkhead and hull form a stiff, I-beam-like structure. If they are to be cut down, additional reinforcing needs to be added to maintain the same stiffness and strength as the original structure.
The back was soft, but still there, the seat slats were totally rotted out. I got deck boards and ripped those into new seat slats, and I used this product called wood hardener on the back wood. The seat looks new, but that doesn't bother me.
Over the 4 foot span of the bench, the slats sagged a couple inches when I sat in the middle of the bench. To remedy this saggy situation, 1-1/2″ wide support cleats were attached lengthwise to the underside of the front, back, and middle slats.

Re: How can I strengthen my bench seat? A 1 1/2" bench is what you need, either 2 pieces of 3/4 ply laminated together of a 2x whatever.
After attaching the new boards to the bench, the screws poked out of the seat. Ouch. To fix that, they added small wood shims between the new boards and the old boards. This gave a little more distant for the screws to go into, so that nothing poked out the top.
